Pool Deck Resurfacing

Cooler, Safer
Rebuilt

A Florida pool deck takes a beating — sun, rain, chlorine and constant foot traffic crack it, fade it, and turn it into a surface too hot to stand on. Resurfacing rebuilds it: seals the cracks, restores the finish, and adds a cool-deck coating that stays walkable barefoot in July.

Clever Coatings resurfaces pool decks across Florida — statewide, plus South Georgia. This page covers what’s involved, the cool-deck options, what it costs, and how to book.

—What is it

What Pool Deck Resurfacing Is
And When You Need It

Pool deck resurfacing is the process of repairing and recoating a worn concrete or paver deck so it’s structurally sound, slip-resistant and cool underfoot again. It’s not a cosmetic patch — a proper resurfacing job seals hairline cracks before they spread, rebuilds low or spalled sections, and applies a new textured finish that’s bonded to the slab.

Signs your deck needs it:

Cracks running through the surface, especially near the coping or expansion joints

Spalling or flaking concrete — the surface crumbles or pops off in chips

Faded, chalky colour that rubs off on your hands or feet

A deck that's genuinely painful to walk across barefoot by mid-morning

Standing water, algae staining, or a surface that's gone slick when wet

The process itself runs in stages: pressure-wash and degrease the slab, grind and patch cracks and low spots, prime, apply the base coat, then the textured cool-deck topcoat and sealant. For decks with structural cracking or a badly deteriorated base, we treat this the same way we approach a garage floor coating job — surface prep decides how long the finish lasts, not the topcoat.

— The Florida Problem

Heat, Fade and Cracks

Florida is one of the harshest climates in the country for an exposed concrete deck, for three reasons.

UV exposure

Year-round sun bleaches pigment out of standard concrete and cheaper coatings within a few seasons, leaving a chalky, faded surface.

Thermal cycling

Concrete expands in the afternoon heat and contracts overnight or after a downpour cools it fast. That constant movement is what opens hairline cracks into real ones.

Moisture and chlorine

Afternoon storms, humidity and daily chlorine splash-out drive water into porous or cracked concrete, which accelerates spalling and feeds algae growth.

—Cool-Deck Finishes

Walkable Barefoot

A cool-deck finish is a textured, light-reflective coating designed specifically for pool surrounds in hot climates. Two things make it work:

Heat reflection

Lighter, reflective pigments and a textured profile keep surface temperatures noticeably lower than bare or dark-coloured concrete — often the difference between a deck you can cross barefoot at noon and one you can't.

Slip resistance

The same texture that breaks up heat also adds grip when the deck is wet — the condition it's in most of the time around a working pool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pool deck resurfacing cost?
It depends on the size and condition of the deck and the finish you choose. We quote against your actual deck — cracks, drainage and square footage all move the number — with no surprises after.
A quality coating lasts many years even in full Florida sun, provided the surface is prepped and sealed properly. Cheap resurfacing that skips the prep is what fails fast.

A textured coating that reflects heat so the deck stays comfortable underfoot in the Florida sun — and adds grip when it’s wet. It’s the finish most pool owners here actually want.
